Tale of Three Fantasy Gamers Monthly Round Up - September

Good evening children and welcome to the first monthly round up of our Tale of Three Fantasy Gamers challenge between Mighty Simo with his rampaging Orc & Goblin horde, Dorn's Arrow and his nightmarish Skaven and myself with my eternal servants of the Tomb Kings.

So far all three of us have managed to create our 1000 point lists which can be found at the links below

Dorn's Arrow's Skaven
Mighty Simo's Orc & Goblin
O'Shashar's Tomb Kings

Looking over the progress made it has been impressive for me to see how quick the other two have jumped into painting their respective armies.

Ork Boyz will even go into the past for a good scrap

Firstly we have the Orc & Goblin horde which is a clan of his own design called "Da Red Skullz", which so far is comprised of ten funky looking Night Goblins, five fantasy Orcs and the five converted Assault on Black Reach Orks shown above. Now he is back from his get away in Cleethorpes ( taking in all the sights of the local pubs & takeaways ) I expect he will ramp it up again.

Rat Ogres still look like Mickey Mouse on steroids to me

Next up we have the Skaven and I am please to tell you that Dorn's Arrow has not been slacking either. He has managed to paint up a lovely looking Rat Ogre and thirty five Clan Rats, which are a mix of hand weapons and the spear wielding varieties. This also includes a rather nice standard bearer to join his full command spear block. Rumours from Mighty Simo suggest he has been busy since his last post and has finished off more painted vermin to offer up to Papa Nurgle in the near future.

Hopefully the shopped cuteness will temper your anger towards me

While I am sure you have guessed it by the tiny cat in place of skeletons, I don't have any painted Tomb Kings to show you. I did paint up a test model using the paints I picked up especially for this project and I have to say that the bone itself came out just how I wanted it to. Unfortunately that was where my luck ran out. The green I used was too green, the red/brown was too brown and the gold was a bit too pristine for my tastes. So as usual this means I am having colour scheme issues, I should have worked out the scheme before starting the challenge but I was confident in my choices ( I always am at the start and should have foreseen this as it isn't the first time ).

So I have picked up a few different colours and had planned to retry my test model before I wrote this post ( it is sat on my desk at this very moment). However changes in my work life have meant I now have a much more time intensive job which while I am enjoying it has encroached on my limited hobby time.

If that wasn't excuse enough ( I am just full of reasons not to paint ) I keep hearing whispers about Warhammer Quest being ran in the next couple of weeks. This was the inspiration for stripping my Justicar Finari model that was in my last post. She has had my attention this Sunday as I had an afternoon to myself. I have managed to sort the base and make a start on her, all being well I will have a post about her up this week if I finish in time.

So at the end of the first month the standings are as follows:

Dorn's Arrow has completed thirty six models out of a hundred and eight
Mighty Simo has completed twenty models out of ninety two
O'Shashar has completed zero models out of fifty seven

Now I know this is painting me in a very bad light and I will be the first to admit it does. My only saving grace is I now have the majority of the models I will need in my possession along with my Tomb Prince stripped back to metal so all being well this month will be more productive on the Tomb King front. Though I have got my copy of Dread Fleet begging me to open it at the minute and if Warhammer quest does take off again I might dust off my Fiametta I picked up to use as a wizard last time round.

Until next time may you spread his blessings to every corner of your world.

My Tale of Three Gamers Tomb Kings 1000 point Army List

Good afternoon children of the Plague Father, today I offer up my Tomb Kings list for the Cupboard of Nurgle Tale of Three Fantasy Gamers challenge. At this point I haven't read the rule book fully or played any games so as far as I know this could be the worst list I could make but it uses a few different models I fancied painting so should still be good fun, of course any criticism of any massive flaws with it will be appreciated.

So first up here is my list:

Heroes
Liche priest level 2 with Earthing rod
Tomb Prince with Great Weapon

Core
3 chariots with Banner of Eternal flame
18 Skeletal Archers with Musician
30 Skeletal Warriors with Hand Weapons & Shields

Special
3 Necropolis Knights with Musician

Rare
Casket of souls

Total 997

The list seems smaller than I was expecting but this is probably due to having Knights, a Casket and a unit of Chariots though all three do seem to be getting praise around the forums. I have an idea of the colour scheme I plan to go with these which will I will be starting shortly ( as I am the only one who hasn't started painting yet ) which is currently looking at being a brown/red for the wood with a green/blue ( closer to green than turquoise though ) with brass in place of the gold to try and given a more weather look without going down the verdigris route, though I do like the one in the codex.

The above picture from Blue Table Painting is similar to what I am going for and over the next week I plan to paint up a test model to make sure I am happy with the scheme if the weather stays cool as whenever it gets warm I cannot bring myself to paint.
Until next time children be sure to spread the blessings of the Plague Father to all you encounter.

A Tale of Three Fantasy Gamers - Introudction

Good evening children of the plague father. This evening I am pleased to announce that Mighty Simo, Dorn's Arrow and myself have decided to start a "Tale of Three Fantasy Gamers" to try and get a starter fantasy army each with plans of trying out 8th edition. I got inspired to do this after following the progress of Millests TOTG and had initially wanted to do an Imperial Guard of my own, however when trying to rally the troops for this no one was interested in starting yet another 40k army and I was at the point of just doing it solo as another project I shouldn't take on until I have finished everything else ( though if my hints of wanting an airbrush for Christmas have been noticed by my wife I might get Imperial Guard and go full tank column ) .

Luckily while trying to convince Mighty Simo he needs another army to use other than his Chaos Marines he said he would be interested in doing it with Fantasy as had collected some Orks from AOBR he wanted to try and use in WFB along with some Night Goblins he had got cheap at the FLGS. With this opportunity rising I decided why not and then had to decide between the Tomb Kings I wanted to start or the boxes of Lizardmen I have in my hobby corner from last year when the hype of 8th hit and I was convinced it was worth investing in ( one game since 8th has been out at 600 points says it wasn't ). In the end true to my nature the models I already own were ignored in favour of the army I always wanted.

After talking it over we are going to write up a 1000 point legal list which will be broken down into 200 points per two months incase of holidays and the like. Now I know this doesn't seem a lot but when looking over the cost of models some are cheap to the point of seeming like a ploy to sell plastic in bulk so a 1000 point army could be quite sizeable.

Army wise I will be going a head with my Tomb Kings, Mighty Simo is starting an Orcs and Goblins while Dorn is treating us to more of his Skaven. The plan is to have an update on each armies progress every week with a round up at the end of each month. Lists will be submitted before the end of August and we will start on September 1st and run until the end of June 2012.

At this point there is no punishment for people who slack off but this may get reviewed if it needs to be, at this point I don't want to be too heavy handed with it and take away the fun and just make it a chore. We will try to post some none Fantasy posts as well but it will not count towards the TOTFG posts so might be a little rarer. All being well a 1000 point army won't take almost a year.

Until next time children keep spreading his blight.

Black Templar or Tomb Kings

Good afternoon children of the Plague Father thank you for joining me again in our humble part of his garden. This week has been a little hectic with me getting 16 skeletal archers built up to go with my Liche priest and following that up by treating them all to a base coat.

This had me thinking I was on track with Tomb Kings and I would start painting them up allowing me to finally stick to my plans of 1 unit finished before I buy another..

However after a 2v2 game with Mighty Simo and his friend Liam ( which saw me rolling out my Templar to back up my T'au Cadre as our usual forth wasn't free ). I was quite happy with how they played out, despite not using them for over a year and me not really knowing what was the best way to use them since the FAQ. This reminded me that I had a few unopened boxes waiting to be built up in my 40k corner ( and gave me an excuse to open every box to see what treasure was hiding in plain sight )

Nearly £100 worth of marines ignored on a shelf and my wife still lets me live is a miracle
With my passion for the Crusaders reignited I took a willing volunteer to the painting table to see if I could do a better job with then than my last attempt with them nearly two years ago ( the sneaky T'au stole their place as my main army and are still holding that title firmly ).  So to strike while the iron was hot I part assembled the Razorback as a Rhino with the Forgeworld Rhino front & doors kit ( Not sure when they managed to get in my bits box but I have 2 sets of them along with 10 Forgeworld Templar Shields & Shoulder pads )

Dry fitted together nicely except the doors which needed some hot water treatment

I have left the top off to try and encourage myself to paint the inside as I know I won't do it if I make it too fiddly but I do want to improve my modelling and painting so needs must. I looked at using the Forgeworld rear hatch but think it maybe too much to have it on all four sides so instead a small symbol from the chapter upgrade pack was stuck on instead which is a little more subtle and I like the out come so here's hope others do too.

Realistically I know I'm not the quickest modeller or painter and I should pick just one but my Black Templars need love and the Tomb Kings are an army I have wanted since I was little ( not that I have ever actually played fantasy ) so both are going to be stealing what little free time I have. On the upside they are very different models so should let me practice different techniques and help me improve ( not to mention plenty of fodder to post on here to keep me from losing favour with the Plague father ).

Until next time children.

First Venture in to Finecast

The official promo picture of the new finecast Liche Priest

Following on from finishing my T'au to the table top level for Blogwars I have decided to have a little break from them as I feel a little burnt out. We have recently been talking about trying WFB and the first army in the range that caught my eye when I was young was the Tomb Kings but never went any further than just liking the look of them.

Now they have been re-released with a shiny new army book to go with 8th I have decided to try my hand at collecting a small force ( no doubt it will quickly get out of control ) so I can try a game as I have never played a fantasy properly so could end up being a painting exercise but who doesn't love skeleton minions.

Now if you are still with me following my ramblings I applaud you, now as the title and the picture suggest my first model I have picked up is a finecast Liche Priest and a box of basic Skeletons I plan to build as archers but today is about the priest. I bought it in store as had heard all sorts of rumours about the models and returns being refused for all but the most destroyed of models so needed to eye one up myself.

As luck had it two were in store but both had slight issues, the first had a bent staff and the second had some bubbling on the face so needless to say the crooked staff came home with me.

Cleaner out of the box than I was expecting

Once I got it out of the box it was looking cleaner than I expected with only a little bit of flash mainly focused around the cloth and the blade of his staff which came away with little effort though the blade had two large rods of resin stuck to it but nothing else. The first thing I noticed was that it is very flexible ( no models were hurt during test only the sprue getting abused ) and soft so found clippers were no good for the job and had to use my knife instead.

Free from the tyrannical grip of the sprue

At this point I did notice that the underside of the arm holding the staff had bubbled on the bone and pretty much destroyed it as the bone is very thin though is out of site and a small amount of green stuff should fix this I hope.

Over all I'm happy with the model and the new finecast was easy enough to work with though I would have much preferred to just go to plastic rather than resin. However I think I will be avoiding any models I can't see through the packaging as would hate to get home only to find its a miscast and then grief in store trying to return it. Though as I have only heard rumoured stories of refusals you would hope it won't be an issue as long as where you buy don't become unreasonable.

Dry fitted and the withered arm doesn't look as bad as I expected
