Skaven Warlock Engineer Completed

Greetings pestilent friends. I have been slow with my painting recently, but have finally finished my Warlock Engineer.

I wanted to reflect the twisted technology possessed by this character by using a Warlock-Augmented Halberd, and so followed the guide in White Dwarf no 362 for painting crystalline surfaces (Eldar power weapons), and swapped the blues for greens (namely snot green and scorpion green in the old gw colours). I'm really pleased with how the effect turned out, as well as the model as a whole.

 

I also had time to paint my poisoned wind mortar team, and went for a swirling warpstone infused gas look for inside the globes.

Next up on the painting agenda is a blood bowl orc for the new team that I am hoping to make. I have simply used a spare model from the assualt on black reach set and chopped off his weapons and posed him in a position where he looks like he is about to smash into someone. Here is how he looks so far:

I plan to add more AoBR orks for linemen, some WFB Black Orcs, a few goblins and a stone troll. Early days yet though as I also want to get started on my Dark Angels from Dark Vengeance and make more progress on my Skaven. Until next time folks...

Tale of Three Gamers (Skaven Update)

Greetings fellow followers of The Decayed One, it feels ages since I last posted, I must have got lost in Nurgle's garden. In actual fact I have been busy the last few weeks redecorating, however I have a progress update to show you:

Skavenslaves (almost complete)

Recently I have been working on my skavenslaves unit. I now have 6 ranks of slaves completed, so only another 10 slaves to paint for the list :) Currently half the slaves have shields and half don't (this is due to using the starter set for half of them. In time the ones with shields will be a second clan rat unit, and I will paint up more scabby ones as slaves without shields).

You may notice a skink which my girlfriend painted for me, and also a couple of night goblins who have been strung along into the horde (through no choice of their own I'm sure). I'm hoping to add another couple of non-ratty types to the group as well as more rats with whips to herd them on.

So as for the progress updates here are all the models I have painted so far for my list:

Clanrats with spears and shields (19 more to paint)

My list is starting to come together, but still a lot of rats left to get through. I'm currently halfway through painting the Warlock Engineer and the Poisoned Wind Mortar team (trying out a new technique on the warlock's halberd too, so hopefully that will come off well), but am on holiday next week, so no painting :( but lots of sun and fun :)

Tale of Three Gamers (Orc & Goblins)

Good day to you all and thank you for dropping in to join us again. We apologise for being a bit slack lately. We've had a variety of distractions lately. Myself, I have been sorting the completion date on a purchase of my first house with my girlfriend. This all completes next week and this unfortunately means majority of my spare time will be put into moving in and getting the house decorated and what not.

However as I did promise last time I have finished my first 5 Orc Boyz with dual hand weapons the other day. I only need to glue a bit of static grass to them and they should be done. I am unsure when I will be able to get more Orcs done with 6th Edition being announced as I may start on some of my Chaos minions.

Before I forget, thank you all who voted for my Thunderwolf. I didn't have the time to put as much effort in as my Nurgle Chaos Lord and I was not expecting victory this time around.

Tale of Three Gamers (Orc & Goblins)

Hello and welcome back to our favoured Cupboard of Nurgle. As I mentioned in my last post a week or so ago I had finished another 5 Night Goblins. I also said I would post some pictures of my army so far to show you the amount of models I have painted since last August.

Now as you can see I have three blocks of infantry done so far out of four. I am currently working on the fourth block, which are five Orc Boyz with dual hand weapons. Once I finish my 1,000 point army the first thing I will be expanding on is increasing the size of the block of infantry from 20 to 40 models to gain the horde rule.

Now as you can see for the Night Goblins with bows I have only got a musician option as its a waste of points to pay the extra for a champion and standard bearer as these only benefit units when they are in hand to hand combat and as you can imagine the last thing I want for my archers is to be in combat. This unit will have a fanatic that I have not painted yet. I may even add him to the spear regiment so they have two fanatics I haven't decided yet.

My Night Goblins with spears have the full command option as these guys will need as much help as possible in combat. When I expand my army I am going to chuck in a Night Goblin Big Boss with Great weapon and expand the ranks to 40 models. I am unsure what to do with the Shaman. He will be safer in the spear unit as the champion can answer any challenges, but because they are a combat unit he will also be in the greatest danger. Another plus side placing him with this unit is that he should be in range for most if not all the goblin spells.

Finally here are my Orc Boyz unit with hand weapon and shield. Additions to this unit will be another 19 Boyz and an Orc Big Boss with Great weapon. Another reason I want to do this is that they are a pain to rank up at the moment as 10 of the models are conversion from the Ork Boyz from the Battle on Black Reach box set.

All in all I am pretty happy with my green skin horde and they have been a joy to paint. When I created this army I wanted the Orcs and Goblins to be unified  as a group of large tribe gathering together t osmite their common foes but also distinguishable from each other. The Orcs for example are from 'Da' Red Skullz' tribe that I made up and gave them a red spot colour. The Goblins I have painted with purple robes instead of the standard black. I haven't come up with a name for them yet though. Any suggestions let me know in the comments below.

Tale of Three Gamers (Orc & Goblins) Update

Greeting fellow travellers of the empyrean. First of all please accept my apologies for our lack of updates lately. As some of you may know Diablo 3 was released last week. Myself and O'Shashar have been slaying demonic filth from Sanctuary. This has unfortunately taken time away from our beloved hobby. Never fear though as I have an offering for you today of some more of my Night Goblins that I finished before painting my Thunderwolf.

I am more please with this set of 5 Goblins because I remembered the  white triangles on the hood, which I feel helps to frame the face. I have just ordered some Army Painter Matt Varnish in a bottle so that I can apply the white triangles on my other 10 Goblins and then paint over it with the Varnish.

On my painting table at the moment are the last 5 Goblins of my 20 Goblin unit with short bows. There is slow progress going on at the moment as the lure of Diablo 3 is just too strong! I do want them done as soon as possible though as that will give me 3 fulls units out of 6 and having 62 models done out of 96 means I will have just under a third of my models left to do.

Tale of 3 Gamers Update (Orc and Goblins)

Good day and welcome back to our humbled Cupboard of Nurgle. In the cupboard this week I have an offering of some painted Gobbo's for my Orc and Goblin Horde. I am currently finishing off another 5, which I hope to get done by this weekend so that I can attempt to get my Space Wolf Thunderwolf Cavalry underway and done by the 9th May, which will be a bit of a challenge with the size of it.

So hopefully by this weekend I will have 15/20 of these done and I will be one step closer to having a 1000 point army to have game. I have noticed that I have forgotten to put the white triangles around the hood and this will need doing to tie them in with the Night Goblin Spear regiment. I will do this after I have finished my Thunder Wolf.

As O'Shashar has mentioned, we are doing this as a celebration of our first birthday. Unfortunately we will not be giving these models away, but we are welcoming others to submit photos of their Thunder Wolf Cavalry and we will have a vote for the best painted model again. The winner can walk away with the smug feeling of having the best painted model. 

To prevent your hard work from being exploited by the inter webs we would suggest taking the picture that says Cupboard of Nurgle and your name or username. It will be easy to spot if anyone tries to pass of your model as work they have done themselves ;)

As I mentioned last week when I posted up my finished Night Goblin Shaman and Night Goblin Fanatic that I had 5 more models completed for you this week. I have completed the first 5 Night Goblins with Short bows. They have turned out rather nicely and I am currently under way painting another 5 at the moment.

Tale of Three Gamers Update (Orc and Goblins)

Hello and good day to all you beloved followers of the Pestilent One. I was hoping to have this post up earlier in the week, but my Internet decided to throw me a curve ball and not work, the blasted thing! Anyway as I mentioned in my last post I had already finished two more models for my Orc and Goblin horde. I have finished my Night Goblin Shaman and an old school Fanatic.

This is one of my favourite Lord/Hero characters of the Orc and Goblins army and I just had to have to have it. The dynamic pose is brilliant. I was very tempted to try a glowing effect around his eyes and in the eye sockets of the skulls on his staff, but I wasn't brave enough to attempt this. I might try the technique out on a spare model and do it on another shaman as I already have an Orc Shaman lying around to be painted.

The fanatic model is one of the older metal models that I have had for some years now. I believe I originally got it for my Orc Bloodbowl team about 10 years ago. I thought he would come in handy for my Orc and Goblin list. I am not sure if you can notice, but I have tried to blend purple on his nose and cheeks to try and represent the Fanatic being intoxicated from Mad Cap Mushroom brew they drink before battle!

Tale of Three Gamers Update (Orcs and Goblins)

Good day and welcome fellow children of the Plague Father. Today I have for you another update on my Orc and Goblin horde. I am more or less on track, about half way through my horde of green skins. I managed to finish my command for my Orc Boyz mob. I think they have turned out quite nicely as you can see below.


On another note if you are not aware, myself, O'Shashar and Dorn's Arrow are having a little painting competition in commemoration of getting 50 members. We have achieved this in 10 months, which I have to say I never expected so thank you all for sticking with us.

Now we came to decision that to bring in the theme of our blog it would be fitting to use a Nurgle model and after some discussion we went for the recent Nurgle Chaos Lord. I loved the look of this model as soon as I saw it and will find it a joy to paint, but I will admit it will be sad to see it go once I have it completed, but I might purchase another one just for myself ;).

I am going to try and replicate the 'Eavy Metal teams paint scheme, because I feel that it matches the model so well, I am going to make a few tweaks and obviously it wont be painted as good (as I wouldn't have my desk job that's for sure if I was). I have him sprayed and ready to start.

Tale of Three Gamers (Orcs and Goblins)

Good afternoon and welcome to Nurgle's Cupboard of delights. We apologise for not posting on a regular weekly basis. We are all tied up in other activities at the moment. However, I have managed to pull something together for you all today. I have finished the command for my Night Goblin spear man unit. This now means I have 20 man unit completed and I have started on the command for my Orc Boyz with shields. In the future I aim to increase the number to 40 so I can make then a nasty horde unit.

As you can see they are looking mighty mean and ready for battle. I am pretty please with them and all I need to do is sort out a movement tray for them. On another high note O'Shashar's eagle eye caught a nice box of terrain in our local GS. I have taken a picture of my share of the haul below. I paid £62.10 for it and the RRP of it is around £100 so I think that's a pretty good deal for what I got.

I am hoping to have my Orc Boyz done as soon as possible as that will bring me just below the half way mark, but this scenery is crying out to be painted, but I want to 'Chaos' them up to us for my Chaos Space Marines. Tale of Three Gamers update (Orcs and Goblins)

Hello and welcome back again this week to the Plague Father's blessed Cupboard of Nurgle. As some of you may know I promised a much better update this week in regards to what I have been up to, a kind of mystery project so to speak. I will apologise as this mystery project hasn't progressed as quickly as I would like due to miniature side projects including an update on my Orc and Goblin horde. I have started this project, but I thought I would turn to our faithful followers for input on what should happen with this project.

As you can see I haven't gotten very far at all, but this is because I am torn between two idea's for this piece of board. Originally I wanted to create a fuel station to accompany my ammo dump I am currently painting, but then I thought that I could make a kind of command post so to speak. I want it look a little something like the one Forgeworld used to sell. If you don't know what I'm on about a picture can be found here. OK so my question to you guys is would you prefer me to make an fuel station or a command post?

On a side note I used my Black and Decker multi tool to sand the edges I bought for £40 a while back and I have to say it is totally worth it as I now longer have to deal with cramp in my hands from sanding the edges!

OK and now onto my Orcs and Goblins. As you can see I have managed to finish another five Night Gobbos and 5 Orc Boyz. As you may be able to tell with my Orc Boyz they do not seem to rank up very well which is starting to concern me. This is because 10 of them are converted Orks from the Assault on Black Reach box set and there arms stick out a bit. If the worst happens I will just have to paint more Orc Boyz with shields until I have 20 that rank up as I am at some point going to increase the squad size to 40. This will be the same for the Night Gobbos, but because they actually rank up I am not to concerned with them at this time.

So at the moment I have assembled and base coated quite a bit ready for painting. I am hoping to have some this done for a post next week for you. I have got the command squads for both my Orc Boyz mob and Night Gobbos mob as well as 10 40k barrels, my ammo dump and some tank barricades. I am hoping to have the barrels, barricades and the ammo dump for next week.

Progress, Injuries and Distractions

Greetings followers of the Plague Lord. Today I thought I would talk about my last month's hobby activity which brings me to the title, 'Progress, Injuries and Distractions.' So first of all I would like to share with you a couple of photos of 'Progress' towards my 1000 point Skaven list.


So above are 20 Clanrats which I will mix into my Slave unit (and pretend they don't have shields). I will be mixing in some non-rat members as well as more poor looking wretches to the unit shortly in order to boost it to 40 strong.


The above are another 20 Clanrats, this time with spears and shields, so another 19 to add to this block and I will be getting somewhere with my ever daunting list.


Above is my 2nd Standard Bearer and my first attempt at a very simple freehand banner design, which I am fairly happy with.

Now onto the 'Injuries'. A few months ago I broke my toe while kickboxing, which allowed me to spend a fair amount of time painting. However this month I injured my hand while doing a much less extreme sport (washing the pots haha) and was unfortunately bandaged up for a week. However it was around this time that the idea of doing Warhammer Quest started cropping up. Which leads me to the 'Distractions'...



Here is my Warrior Priest that I have painted up for Warhammer Quest. I'm really happy with how the model has turned out as I have always wanted an Empire army from the Ostermark region and this model can be my first step towards that aim. Now if only I can find enough free time to get to one of these Warhammer Quest meetings...

Tale of Three Fantasy Gamers Monthly Round Up - September

 

Good evening children and welcome to the first monthly round up of our Tale of Three Fantasy Gamers challenge between Mighty Simo with his rampaging Orc & Goblin horde, Dorn's Arrow and his nightmarish Skaven and myself with my eternal servants of the Tomb Kings.

So far all three of us have managed to create our 1000 point lists which can be found at the links below

Looking over the progress made it has been impressive for me to see how quick the other two have jumped into painting their respective armies.

Ork Boyz will even go into the past for a good scrap

Firstly we have the Orc & Goblin horde which is a clan of his own design called "Da Red Skullz", which so far is comprised of ten funky looking Night Goblins, five fantasy Orcs and the five converted Assault on Black Reach Orks shown above. Now he is back from his get away in Cleethorpes ( taking in all the sights of the local pubs & takeaways ) I expect he will ramp it up again.

Next up we have the Skaven and I am please to tell you that Dorn's Arrow has not been slacking either. He has managed to paint up a lovely looking Rat Ogre and thirty five Clan Rats, which are a mix of hand weapons and the spear wielding varieties. This also includes a rather nice standard bearer to join his full command spear block. Rumours from Mighty Simo suggest he has been busy since his last post and has finished off more painted vermin to offer up to Papa Nurgle in the near future.

While I am sure you have guessed it by the tiny cat in place of skeletons, I don't have any painted Tomb Kings to show you. I did paint up a test model using the paints I picked up especially for this project and I have to say that the bone itself came out just how I wanted it to. Unfortunately that was where my luck ran out. The green I used was too green, the red/brown was too brown and the gold was a bit too pristine for my tastes. So as usual this means I am having colour scheme issues, I should have worked out the scheme before starting the challenge but I was confident in my choices ( I always am at the start and should have foreseen this as it isn't the first time ).

So I have picked up a few different colours and had planned to retry my test model before I wrote this post ( it is sat on my desk at this very moment). However changes in my work life have meant I now have a much more time intensive job which while I am enjoying it has encroached on my limited hobby time.

If that wasn't excuse enough ( I am just full of reasons not to paint ) I keep hearing whispers about Warhammer Quest being ran in the next couple of weeks. This was the inspiration for stripping my Justicar Finari model that was in my last post. She has had my attention this Sunday as I had an afternoon to myself. I have managed to sort the base and make a start on her, all being well I will have a post about her up this week if I finish in time.

So at the end of the first month the standings are as follows:
  
Dorn's Arrow has completed thirty six models out of a hundred and eight
Mighty Simo has completed twenty models out of ninety two
O'Shashar has completed zero models out of fifty seven

Now I know this is painting me in a very bad light and I will be the first to admit it does. My only saving grace is I now have the majority of the models I will need in my possession along with my Tomb Prince stripped back to metal so all being well this month will be more productive on the Tomb King front. Though I have got my copy of Dread Fleet begging me to open it at the minute and if Warhammer quest does take off again I might dust off my Fiametta I picked up to use as a wizard last time round.
