Super Dungeon Explore and Dark Angels Test Model

Greetings Nurgley Friends. Today I just have a quick post for you with a couple of completed models (and one not so completed).

First up is a Spawning Point and Dwarf model from Super Dungeon Explore. I picked up the box for this brand new on Ebay, the aim of which is for me to paint half of it and my girlfriend to paint the other half, hopefully fairly quickly so that we can play a few games. So far I'm in the lead however as she hasn't picked up a brush yet.

I have also begun work on the Paladin figure (only painted the basecoat colours so far). I am really impressed with the SDE models, they are lovely figures to paint, and I'm pleased how well the colours are coming out on the white primer.

I have also finished my test model for my Dark Angels (just in time for the new codex!) I'm pleased with the colour scheme I have gone for here, as due to the Army Painter Angel Green spray I should be able to shift these out fairly quickly (I only do a subsequent wash, re-layer and edge highlight after that).

Next up on my paint station will be my test model for the Deathwing, which is currently being primed with Army Painter Skeleton Bone spray, and which I can't wait to get working on.

The Cleaver'land Greens

Greetings all you pestilent friends. Recently I have become a bit bogged down in all the Skaven Slaves I have been painting, and so decided to have a break. This coincided nicely with the start of the NFL season. It got me thinking, I am a big Cleveland Browns fan (unfortunately as there isn't much to love at the moment), and I wondered if I could create an Orc Blood Bowl team with the look of the Browns, but looking as Orc-y and as mean as ever. So here is the 1st member of the Cleaver'land Greens:

One Lineman down, once I have a few more I will probably add numbers to the metal plate on his back, to help designate his position. I shall have to see what other Orc/Ork bits I have lying around and plan the rest of my team, I'm thinking a couple of Black Orc Blockers, a goblin or 2, and hopefully a troll in there somewhere also. I know Mighty Simo has an almost complete Norse team, so hopefully if I continue building the team there could be a game or 2 in the new year, maybe even on Superbowl Sunday.

Skaven Warlock Engineer Completed

Greetings pestilent friends. I have been slow with my painting recently, but have finally finished my Warlock Engineer.

I wanted to reflect the twisted technology possessed by this character by using a Warlock-Augmented Halberd, and so followed the guide in White Dwarf no 362 for painting crystalline surfaces (Eldar power weapons), and swapped the blues for greens (namely snot green and scorpion green in the old gw colours). I'm really pleased with how the effect turned out, as well as the model as a whole.

 

I also had time to paint my poisoned wind mortar team, and went for a swirling warpstone infused gas look for inside the globes.

Next up on the painting agenda is a blood bowl orc for the new team that I am hoping to make. I have simply used a spare model from the assualt on black reach set and chopped off his weapons and posed him in a position where he looks like he is about to smash into someone. Here is how he looks so far:

I plan to add more AoBR orks for linemen, some WFB Black Orcs, a few goblins and a stone troll. Early days yet though as I also want to get started on my Dark Angels from Dark Vengeance and make more progress on my Skaven. Until next time folks...

Tale of Three Gamers (Skaven Update)

Greetings fellow followers of The Decayed One, it feels ages since I last posted, I must have got lost in Nurgle's garden. In actual fact I have been busy the last few weeks redecorating, however I have a progress update to show you:

Skavenslaves (almost complete)

Recently I have been working on my skavenslaves unit. I now have 6 ranks of slaves completed, so only another 10 slaves to paint for the list :) Currently half the slaves have shields and half don't (this is due to using the starter set for half of them. In time the ones with shields will be a second clan rat unit, and I will paint up more scabby ones as slaves without shields).

You may notice a skink which my girlfriend painted for me, and also a couple of night goblins who have been strung along into the horde (through no choice of their own I'm sure). I'm hoping to add another couple of non-ratty types to the group as well as more rats with whips to herd them on.

So as for the progress updates here are all the models I have painted so far for my list:

My list is starting to come together, but still a lot of rats left to get through. I'm currently halfway through painting the Warlock Engineer and the Poisoned Wind Mortar team (trying out a new technique on the warlock's halberd too, so hopefully that will come off well), but am on holiday next week, so no painting :( but lots of sun and fun :)

Dorn's Arrow's Finished Thunderwolf

Greetings fellow followers of the Plague God. On Friday I finally finished my Thunderwolf (sorry about the delay, its been a very busy couple of weeks).

This was a fantastic opportunity to try out some new techniques (I have never painted that much fur),  and just a great chance to paint one of the Sons of Ruus. For the wolf I wanted to base the colours on those on the front of the box, and so went for a striped wolf of greys and browns, with a blend into a khaki highlight to tie the colours together naturally. I also wanted to go with a snowy base and so this was the first model I have tried modelling snow on and am quite pleased with the way the wolf and base go together as though its a natural habitat.

The kit was great with lots of options. Being a Crimson Fists player, there is just something in me which screams "grab the power fist!" So I did. Assembling the kit did take a while as Mighty Simo mentioned in his post, but the resulting pose is really dynamic and there were so many options no one really had to surrender any items they wanted to use.

To paint the marine I followed the tips in a recent white dwarf (with the old paints) although I added a few layers between the basecoat and edge highlight to blend the armour colours a bit more. Adding battle damage was also a first for me, and I am really pleased with the effect.

And one of the reasons I'm so late with the Thunderwolf is that I was halfway through another batch of 5 Stormvermin for the Tale of X Gamers. So there they are. On other news, its my birthday today, and my girlfriend bought me the 'How to Paint Citadel Miniatures' book and DVD, so I'm very pleased (and impressed) and am about to crack on with some more slave rats for my list. What's that on the dark seas???

Avast ye land lubbers, finally I spot ships on the horizon! After much longer than I had hoped, I finally have some pictures of two completed Dreadfleet models.

The models are so detailed it has taken me ages to paint them, probably about a month each. Thinking about it, apart from these and the Nurgle Lord for our recent competition I don't think I have painted anything else all year! (This will be remedied soon!)

  
The sails in particular are a real challenge, as it took lots of thin layers of paint to build up a smooth coat, but I'm really pleased with the results. The ships are packed full of tiny details such as cannons, anchors, and gold statues etc, and so at times it seemed like there was always another step to go to completion.

The writing on the scrolls was very daunting but by using a bit of a guide from a very sharp H pencil, I was able to produce a look that I'm happy with. To be honest, I'm not sure which of the two ships I actually prefer now that I've finished them both, and that can only be a good thing from my gaming perspective as I will be happy to command either vessel.

Alas, I have grown weary of painting ships (or rather I need a break from it), and also I need to catch up with Mighty Simo in the Tale of X Gamers challenge, so its back to the ratmen for me (and also a certain Thunderwolf). Dorn's Arrow's Finished Chaos Nurgle Lord (and whats that on the horizon?)

Hi there followers of the pestilent one, I finally have photos of my completed Nurgle Lord.

Although I was the first to finish painting the model, my lack of decent photos means that my post is somewhat belated. What I wanted to get out of this competition was to try out some new skills. The armour is where I have practised my first use of blending. I wanted to achieve a death guard type light green colour and am very happy with the result. I got this colour by using a foundation of fortress grey, followed by a couple of washes of catachen green. I then glazed adeptus battlegrey with a tiny amount of enchanted blue over the armour. After this I used a couple of layers of watered down gretchen green, pulling the brush away from the recessed areas and towards the raised areas. I repeated this step, gradually adding in rotten flesh and leaving part of the previous colour showing.

This model was a joy to paint, with no real fiddly or hard to get to areas, and I think it may inspire me to start my own warriors of chaos army. My obsessive compulsive nature is going to make it hard to let go of this model, and I may have to instead award the winner of my model with a brand new boxed version as this plague fiend whispers to me from my shelf. As for now, I have just completed painting my Heldenhammer from the Dreadfleet set... it took me much longer than expected as it is such a detailed model. Here is a rough photo from my phone:


My next project is to paint the Bloody Reaver so that the pirate battles can commence! Until next time...

Crimson Fists Showcase

Hi everyone, I thought I would take a break from my Skaven progress posts (mainly as there hasnt been much recently) and show some pictures of some of my Crimson Fists army.

First off here is the Chapter Master himself, Pedro Kantor. In the above picture he is with my Sternguard Veterans unit. Including Pedro in an army list allows you to use Sternguard as a scoring unit (which has been very handy at times). My favourite thing about Pedro is the extra attacks he gives out due to his Living Chapter Banner rule. Half of my Sternguard are converted from a tactical squad and the Black Templars upgrade sprue as well as some bitz I had left around, and they fit in well with the metal figures so I'm happy I took that approach.

One of my other units I often use is my Chaplain with Jump Pack attached to an Assault Squad. Rerolls for an assault squad are fantastic, this unit ripped apart Mighty Simo's Demon Prince in a single turn the last time I fielded them (and he was not happy!!!)

My Terminator Librarian has only seen battle the once so far (and rolled a perils of the warp - doh!) however I can see big things for him if I can learn how to use him properly. My ideal plan is to add him to the Sternguard unit and teleport into ideal locations to unleash the Sternguard's special ammo.

Another unit type I am fond of are the Scouts. I tend to use my scouts in a defensive capacity, holding objectives in my own deployment zone, however I sometimes use the land speeder storm and bike squad to try to perform last minute daring moves to contest objectives, or to lend support to an assualt. In my last game my scout squad joined an assault and actually caused 2 wounds on Typhus... Bargain!

I also have painted up a Predator, Dreadnaught, Tactical Squad, Devestator Squad, Techmarine, and a Captain, however I'm not as happy with the paintjobs on those. I have lots more to paint for my Crimson Fists, including a Vindicator, Landraider Crusader, Rhino, another Dreadnaught, a second Tactical Squad, some more scouts, more terminators, some assault terminators, Darnath Lysander (as a counts as model), another Captain (which will be my attempt to create Alessio Cortez the Immortal), a Command Squad and thats it off the top of my head... Damn you Ebay!!!

Progress, Injuries and Distractions

Greetings followers of the Plague Lord. Today I thought I would talk about my last month's hobby activity which brings me to the title, 'Progress, Injuries and Distractions.' So first of all I would like to share with you a couple of photos of 'Progress' towards my 1000 point Skaven list.


So above are 20 Clanrats which I will mix into my Slave unit (and pretend they don't have shields). I will be mixing in some non-rat members as well as more poor looking wretches to the unit shortly in order to boost it to 40 strong.


The above are another 20 Clanrats, this time with spears and shields, so another 19 to add to this block and I will be getting somewhere with my ever daunting list.


Above is my 2nd Standard Bearer and my first attempt at a very simple freehand banner design, which I am fairly happy with.

Now onto the 'Injuries'. A few months ago I broke my toe while kickboxing, which allowed me to spend a fair amount of time painting. However this month I injured my hand while doing a much less extreme sport (washing the pots haha) and was unfortunately bandaged up for a week. However it was around this time that the idea of doing Warhammer Quest started cropping up. Which leads me to the 'Distractions'...



Here is my Warrior Priest that I have painted up for Warhammer Quest. I'm really happy with how the model has turned out as I have always wanted an Empire army from the Ostermark region and this model can be my first step towards that aim. Now if only I can find enough free time to get to one of these Warhammer Quest meetings...

Tale of Three Gamers Skaven 1000 point Army List and Update

Hi to all you pestilent folk! So following on from O'Shashar and MightySimo's 1000 point lists and progress reports I thought it was about time I posted my list. I have also been taking advice from the members on dakkadakka.com and have read more of the rule book than the other guys, but also have never played a game of Warhammer Fantasy Battles so there are many lessons to be learned, but here is my list:

Heroes:

Chieftain with Halberd, Shield and Tail Weapon = 57

Chieftain with Battle Standard, Shield and Foul Pendant = 102

Warlock Engineer with Level 1 Wizard and Warplock Pistol = 73

Core:

39 Clanrats with spears and shields and full command = 215

40 Slaves with musician = 82

19 Stormvermin with shields and full command = 177

Special:

2 Rat Ogres and Pack Master = 88

5 Poisoned Wind Globadiers with attached Poisoned Wind Mortar = 115

TOTAL = 999 Points

My basic plan is to use the large blocks of infantry to benefit from my Strength In Numbers special rule and keep me in the fight against the more fightier units. My one worry is the lack of magic in my army list, but I'm hoping my Artillery will make up for that.

As for my progress, well my last post showed the start of my army in a nice fancy light box which I borrowed from MightySimo... Unfortunately I don't own one of those so the following pictures wont be anywhere near as pretty but oh well... I have 35 Clanrats finished, including the command group for my spear group, and I will be starting the other 5 hand weapon rats this week. Below is a picture of the standard bearer for my Clanrat regiment.


And today I finished painting my 1st Rat Ogre (which was a really nice change from all the little critters). Oh and theres a few pus filled boils on there just to please Nurgle himself :)


Due to the fact I will be mixing in my hand weapon rats as part of my slaves unit (and hoping people don't look at the shields) I tally my currently painted total at around 170 points... seems quite small for the number of models I've painted so it should look great on the battlefield once the full horde is painted up.

What I've been up to...

Greetings followers of all things decaying, I thought it was about time I made another post to the festering Cupboard of Nurgle. So recently I have been working on my 1st army for Warhammer Fantasy Battles, a suitably disgusting and vile species with links to the plague god himself... The Skaven!


So for xmas (I know I've been slow, I commit myself to many projects at once) I bought myself the island of blood, which is a seriously good box set. The models are fantastically detailed and the mini rulebook is great, specially as its full colour.


The thing I like about the Skaven is their backstabbing nature, and lined up in their ranks they really look like they would just overwhelm the foe with numbers, biting scratching and stabbing their way to victory, even if the foe was their (ex) best mate:


I am just about to finish another 5 ratmen, which will give my running total as 15 with spears and shields and 15 with hand weapons and shields. Soon I will be assembling and painting the command units for these 2 infantry blocks so hopefully I'll have some follow up pictures. Following the completion of my clanrat units (well until I get more models to expand them) I have 20 stormvermin, 5 poison wind globadiers, 2 rat ogres, 2 warlords, 2 weapon teams and the warlock engineer to paint… so far I have found the Skaven very quick to paint, mainly due to their dirty nature and the generous use of Devlan Mud wash and a simple highlight scheme. So hopefully I will have enough painted for a small game in a few weeks :)


However because I'm a sucker for a good guy, I have also finished my test model of a High Elf Lothern sea guard. I think its one of the nicest models I have ever painted, differing totally in painting methods to the Skaven, being much more about clean, thin layers of paint rather than the dirty wash. I find these different painting techniques help me from getting bored of painting the same thing, and therefore I don't start to try to paint too quickly and bodge them.


Anyway, it would be great to hear what people think, or if they have been starting any new armies or are trying any different methods of keeping their painting style feeling 'fresh'.
