Nurgle Lord of Chaos - Voting

Good afternoon children of Nurgle and thank you for joining me today so that I can announce the voting poll is now up for which of our three Nurgle Lords you prefer ( found in the top right corner ).

O'Shashar's Finished Chaos Nurgle Lord

Good evening followers of Nurgle and welcome back to our pestilent domain. The time of reckoning is drawing closer and soon the voting will commence on which Nurgle Lord our followers find the most repugnant.

The final day for us to finish painting is the 29th at which point I will put a poll up for you to cast your vote for your favourite. Now you have all seen Mighty Simo's and I hear he is venturing into the dank dungeon that holds the shambling horror that is Dorn's Arrow to give his model a glamorous photo shoot for your twisted pleasure.

However this post is about neither of my fellow pawns in Papa Nurgle's games and is about my contribution to our competition. So without further ado here is my Nurgle Lord of Chaos in all his filthy glory.

As you can see I have tried to go with how I feel a Nurgle Lord should be rather than the artwork Games Workshop has provided us with. I went for a more rusted look to the armour without taking it to the point that it would crumble to dust if it was struck.

Next up was the skin, I imagine this brute to be constantly at war rather than recently converted, he is a Lord after all and not a freshly formed conscript. So a more advanced stage of decomposition was in order and I thought a green hue leant itself well to this.

The horn and skulls I tried to give a dirty appearance to as he doesn't strike me as the kind of chap who would take the time to boil the flesh off and bleach his trophies so much as throw it on his belt until all that remained was the bone.

With his loin cloth I went for purple to compliment the green while making sure it was suitably filthy while still covering his modesty.

I tried to keep the base simple as he is a rather large model for the base size he is on so rather than try to over crowd it I just picked out the rocks in a grey tone while giving the ground a muddy appearance as don't imagine much grass would survive his march.

Overall I really enjoyed painting this model and hope who ever becomes his new owner takes care of the ugly little monster.

Nurgle Lord Complete

Good afternoon fellow plague bearers, many of you may know that a couple of weeks back we reached 50 followers. Myself, Dorn's Arrow and O'Shashar are each painting a Nurgle Lord in a mini competition to commemorate this mile stone. The model was an obvious choice for the theme of our blog.

I have to say I have relished the opportunity to paint the Nurgle Lord. I have taken my inspiration for my paint scheme from the one by the 'Eavy Metal team. I have given it a slight twist and I am overall pleased with the outcome. The amour did not turn out as dark as I wanted and I am still unsure of the bloody pus coming from his belly. Anyway I am sure you all dying to see my Nurgle Lord so here are some pictures below.

Winsor & Newton Series 7 Brush Review

Good evening faithful followers of the Plague Father and thank you once again for joining us in the darkest reaches of Nurgle's garden. As I am sure you are all aware we are currently in the midst of a challenge to paint up three Nurgle chaos lords for our 50th follower give away and if you have been cut off from the warp and missed this please click here.

For those of you familiar with my dedication to painting miniatures I am sure you all expected me to keep putting this off until I really had to. To get around this I built this model up pretty much as soon as I got it and left it with a can of primer at the top of my painting pile for the first sign of decent weather. That wasted about a week of my painting time. However this did give me the chance to use Army Painter black spray as my previous can when I tested it before spraying the model was spraying clumps of paint so was binned.

Now the army painter spray goes on well but is very high gloss and would say more just a paint like Games Workshop than an actual primer. After that I filled in the block colours and he was left to relax on my desk.

Last night however I decided that instead of continuing another story on SWTOR I had to get some paint on the model as I was being teased by Mighty Simo & Dorn's Arrow with pictures of their models approaching completion.

As I planned to paint for an hour or two I reached for my brushes and remembered about my Series 7 size 1 brush and how it still looked brand new ( no it wasn't actually just brand new it has had a fair bit of use ). So with my trusty work horse in hand I was off and managed a good three hours of painting and have almost finished the model minus the base.

I tried these brushes out as I was sick of synthetic brushes from Games Workshop going frizzy and having bristles stick out at funny angles as found a basing brush quickly went to the size of a detail brush after sorting it out. Don't get me wrong these are not cheap but I have been using this for the last 6 months and it still looks new ( apart from some paint on the handle and is holding its shape ).

Using guides I found with different suggestions on how to use the brush has helped to minimise damage but I am not a particular delicate painter and keep it flowing in the right direction at the right angle rarely happens. However it hasn't collapsed into a heap of dead bristles or had the all too common lean to the left my previous brushes developed.

I thought it would be too big to use but so far I have only used this on my Nurgle lord from base coating to detail and it has performed well as it has a nice strong point and lets me use the pressure I want. It seems to suck up a lot of paint without developing a ball of paint on the tip either so is a nice bonus.

It is recommended to use these with brush soap however I have only cleaned it with water as I hadn't tried the soap before. I wasn't sure if it was worth the money and if anyone has experience with brush soap please let me know.

Overall I am very happy with these brushes, I have a size 1 & 0 and both perform very well and while they won't make you turn into a professional painter I do believe they have improved my painting by giving me greater control.

Tale of Three Gamers Update (Orcs and Goblins)

Good day and welcome fellow children of the Plague Father. Today I have for you another update on my Orc and Goblin horde. I am more or less on track, about half way through my horde of green skins. I managed to finish my command for my Orc Boyz mob. I think they have turned out quite nicely as you can see below.


On another note if you are not aware, myself, O'Shashar and Dorn's Arrow are having a little painting competition in commemoration of getting 50 members. We have achieved this in 10 months, which I have to say I never expected so thank you all for sticking with us.

Now we came to decision that to bring in the theme of our blog it would be fitting to use a Nurgle model and after some discussion we went for the recent Nurgle Chaos Lord. I loved the look of this model as soon as I saw it and will find it a joy to paint, but I will admit it will be sad to see it go once I have it completed, but I might purchase another one just for myself ;).

I am going to try and replicate the 'Eavy Metal teams paint scheme, because I feel that it matches the model so well, I am going to make a few tweaks and obviously it wont be painted as good (as I wouldn't have my desk job that's for sure if I was). I have him sprayed and ready to start.

50th Follower! You Know What That Means...

That is right faithful followers of Papa Nurgle we now have our 50th follower! We thought that this is the perfect time to have a give away to thank all the people who have been following us and to possibly draw in some new faces.

When I discussed this with my fellow bloggers it was quickly decided that it would need to be one of Nurgles minions that was sent out into the wide world as our gift to the faithful. After a long look over what there was to choose from we decided on the new Nurgle Chaos Lord.

With the prize sorted we then had to decide who would be the one to paint it ( I suggested Mighty Simo as he does love him some painting ). In the end Dorn's Arrow suggested we paint one each and have the internet vote on their favourite. Now don't worry about the other two, they will not be melted down in shame. They will be given away as well! That's right three chances to win a painted Nurgle Chaos Lord.

So the gauntlet has been thrown down and from tonight we have until the 29th of February to have our model ready to go to the public vote. After a week we will know who paints the most beautiful ( or more likely gruesome ) model between us and then we will randomly pick a follower and let them have their choice of the 3 Lords. After they have claimed their prize we will do it again for second place with the choice of the two remaining and then third place will get which get the remaining model.

Good afternoon and thank you for stopping at our dark corner of the warp. It has been a long dark winter and finally I am starting to see some more favourable weather to coerce me back to the hobby table and I do need all the help I can get at the minute.

 

Beware the spare time stealer in all his guises

 

As some of you may know Starwars: The Old Republic came out in late December and being a fan of Starwars and MMOs this was a bad combination and grabbed my spare time by the throat. However after just over a month playing I now have my main two at the level cap so won't need to play quiet so much to keep up with my guild ( though the all voice acting story really does make you want to play from start to finish in one session ). Now I hear you screaming at your monitor "What does this have to do with my beloved hobby? You rambling old fool get on with it!" 

 

Who doesn't love a rambling old man though

 

What this means is that I can now get back into the swing of things and this year I plan to work on many of my projects from the hobby corner. Especially as it has got to the point now where it has escaped from the corner by the sheer weight of unfinished projects. This combined with the sizeable box of Necron reinforcements, who have been waiting decent weather to be built and primed is causing my wife to question if I really need any more boxes of unbuilt toys.

Now the main focus of this will be split between my Necrons,  Tomb Kings ( the ones on my desk shake their bows in anger every time I play SWTOR ) and my terrain. Also with Blog Wars 3 in June I may take my Necrons out for a stroll as they haven't had nearly as much love as they deserve and the first Blog Wars was a good day.

 

Now I do have plenty of terrain built and painted and can field a nice variety ranging from some small home made stone walls up to my possibly too big shrine I built. However this doesn't stop me buying any terrain I see at a reasonable price and the latest purchase is one I have looked forward to owning ever since I saw it released but couldn't justify the price, but first you get to hear the tale of how it became ours you lucky devils.

 

As Mighty Simo said in his last post I spotted a box of terrain at our LFGS, truth be told I spotted this at the start of December but it was saved for a mystery customer However this month while having my almost daily peruse I noticed the box was still there. After unpacking it all I was told it had another two boxes with it I was impressed with what I saw ( why they didn't say "Woah O'Shashar that is saved for someone, get your mittens off it" is beyond me). 

The only trouble was it was still reserved but after a little convincing from myself and Dalinair the owner agreed that nearly two months was long enough and would let me know within the week if he longer wanted it. Later the same day it was ours at 40% off retail and was mostly built.

 

So what did I get? Well I got three GW pieces. The crashed Aquila lander, the Arcane ruins set and a Fortress of Redemption all for less than the Fortress costs on its own. I have already started on this but nothing major as mostly cleaning up the build, removing the Dark Angels symbols as this is for my Black Templars and I already have a paint scheme in mind and all being well February should be a busy month for me hobby wise and can treat all you Nurglings to.

 

This isn't mine but hopefully in the not too distant future mine will be just as painted

 

 

In the end we got £250 worth of assorted terrain from Games Workshop and Pegasus for £150 and split it three ways based on what people wanted to take ( it took an amazing display of willpower to not just keep it all). If you haven't seen the Pegasus terrain I recommend checking it out as it is priced similar to Games Workshop but the ones I have seen come prepainted & are cast as as one piece so is very sturdy.
