Sanctum of the Aquila Part II

Good afternoon children I am glad to see you once again wandering through Father Nurgle's garden to harvest his bounty. Today I bring you part two of my Shrine of the Aquila & Sanctum Imperialis mix which I am referring to as the Sanctum of the Aquila ( unless someone can come up with a better name which shouldn't be hard ).

The eagle did get some Fenris grey on it but one coat covered nicely.

Thanks to the raging sun which keeps sneaking through between the torrential down pours I managed to get this sprayed black using the last of my citadel primer. I noticed it randomly spat out spots of paint which might be due to its age as I haven't used citadel primer for a while but spotted it on my shelf. Over all it came out nice and flat without any problems. Next up I gave it a base coat of Fenris grey foundation paint as to let it stand out nicely on my desert board.

After two coats of Vallejo Brass

Following on from this I added two watered down coats of Vallejo Brass which has covered it for the most part though up close it looks like a third layer may be required just to tidy it up. The base coat could do with a little cleaning up from my messy painting though was worth it to use a larger brush.

Nice but doesn't fit on this model sadly

I plan to have the lower steps, balcony doors and cathedral windows painted the same colour and thought the Vallejo Gun Metal Blue might do the trick after looking through the paint stand at my FLGS ( I consider it a good day if I make it out without at least one pot of paint, it's my Kryptonite ). While I do like the colour ( a nice metallic blue which with some silver highlights could make a quick effective power weapon ) I think the metallic blue doesn't compliment the flat base coat so I plan to redo this with a combination of greys and a brown wash which I have done before on my landing pad platform or possibly going for a Tin Bitz base so I can rust it up with some orange.

My amateur photography sadly washing out the blue

The next step I plan to take is to bring out the detail of the model, either using a dry brush with a lighter blue / grey, an orange wash to depict rust in the corners ( the orange may stand out too much on the blue though ) or a combination of the two. While on the eagle I am going to try a green glaze to try and give the impression of the brass tarnishing with age ( this could either go really well or need another coat to fix it ).

Until next time thank you for reading and if you have ideas on making the main colour appear aged please comment and hopefully the results should be ready for next Sunday ( unless the Templar Rhino that is hiding behind this behemoth decides it wants the paint I promised it ).

Black Templars vs Chaos Batrep

Hello again my fellow plaguelings. Now I was due to start my terrain series this week. But I noticed yesterday, while doing the first post that one of our fellow bloggers at Miniature Tim has done a very good post on essential hobbyist tools and I didn't want to seem like I was jumping on the band wagon. So instead I thought I would have a crack at a battle report of a game me and O'Shashar had on Tuesday.

O'Shashar dusted off his Black Templars recently and I basically used my list from Blog Wars. I will at some point start to make changes to this list and start playing about with some combinations, but I've been so busy making terrain, work, gym, girlfriend...it has been difficult. Now unfortunately there are no pictures of this battle report, but I wanted to get the actual report right first. In the future we want to aim to have some close of pictures of the action and have a turn by turn outcome using the Vassal program.I will apologise now if it comes out long and boring!

The mission is Annihilation with the Spear head deployment. I managed to win the roll and I chose to deploy and go first. We set up in opposite corners, each having a large ruin within our deployment zone. I set up my two squads of Obliterators in my Ruin and then set my Rhino's in a wedge formation. I deployed my Daemon Prince and Defiler just behind the rhino Wedge. O'Shashar set up his twin predators in the opposite end of the board next to his Ruin. His Land Raider was set up at the front of his three Rhino's in tow in a block formation. The Land Speeders where deployed out of sight behind the Ruin.

Turn 1

Chaos

I started by moving my Rhino containing Kharne and his Bezerker Squad and my Plague marine Rhino towards left centre of the the table. The Daemon Prince followed. I then moved my other Bezerker Rhino to the Right to try and draw some fire as I popped the smoke on this Rhino. The Obliterators 'Jazz hands' in the ruin slightly for line of sight and the Defiler advanced towards the opposite ruin.

In the shooting phase my Obliterators attempted to fire on the Predators on the opposite end of the board and they where just out of range. The other squad penetrate one of the Rhino's but it is saved from the cover of the Land Raider. The Defiler shot at the same Rhino with a direct hit and easily manage to penetrate, but on manage the shake up the crew within.

Black Templars

O'Shashar started by advancing his Land Raider at combat speed. The shaken Rhino moved at cruising speed as it was unable to shoot, which the others moved up behind the Land Raider at combat speed. The Rhino's then popped their smoke. The Land Speeders fly over the ruin at combat speed towards the Chaos controlled corner.

In the shooting phase one of Predators shoot at the Defiler and it manages to penetrate once, but its Daemonic possession saves its bacon. The other Predator penetrate the Rhino that was moved out as bait twice and got 2 explosion results. The Bezerkers managed to disembark with only one falling in the explosion.

The Land Raider opens fire with its Multimelta using the machine spirit to shoot the Rhino, but it misses. This leaves the rest of the guns to open fire on the Daemon Prince wounding him twice, hos armour saving him from majority of the wounds. The Land Speeders fired dual Krak missiles at the Defiler, managing to penetrate, but the mighty war machine manages to shrug off the blows due to its demonic possession again.

Turn 2

Chaos

The Terminators arrived from reserve using deep strike and the personal icons so they where in front of the previously shaken Rhino and Land Raider. The defilers moved slightly towards the middle of the board and the Bezerkers now having to abandon their destroyed Rhino foot slogged out into the open. Again the Obliterators 'Jazz hands' around the ruins making sure they had a clean shot on their targets. The Plague Marine Rhino advanced 5inch around the blocking obstacle in the centre of the board at combat speed. Kharne's Rhino moved itself at combat speed and then popped its smoke.

In the shooting phase the Defiler shoots at the front Rhino and getting a direct hit with the battle cannon. With it being ordinance you get to roll 2d6 and choose the highest for penetrating and I managed to roll snakes eyes. Damn you dice gods! The plague marines pop out of the hatch with their plasma guns and let rip on the nearest Rhino, managing to penetrate twice. The smoke managed to save the Rhino from harm.

One pair of Obliterators fire on the same Rhino as the Plague marines. The Rhino shot at one of the Land Speeders and managed to get a glancing hit that ended up stunning it. They manage to penetrate and immobilise the Rhino using Lascannon blasts. The other pair shoot at the Land Raider with Lascannons, but fail to penetrate. In the assault phase the Daemon Prince charged the Land Raider and only managed to hit it three times and penetrate with only one of the hits. This only managed to shake up the crew within.

Black Templars

In O'Shashar's movement phase. The Rhino's behind the Land Raider moved aside to allow it to back up 6 inches to allow the assault terminators within to disembark. The other Land Speeder head towards my table edge at combat speed. The Crusader squad disembarked and moved towards the Bezerkers stuck in the open.

In the shooting phase the Land Speeder opened fire on the vulnerable Bezerkers killing two of them. The Crusaders added their fire killing another two leaving only the Champion and two of his squad. The two Predators open fire on the Defiler again and again despite hitting and getting a penetration they are unable to harm the Daemonic War engine.

The two Rhino's either side of the Land Raider and the Land Raider itself open a torrent of fire on the Daemon Prince. A combined fire power of two Storm Bolters, 2 Bolt Pistols, 2 Melta Guns, Multimelta and twin linked Assault Cannon was unleashed on the Daemon Prince but was only wounded once!

In the assault phase the assault phase the Assault Terminators charged forward with righteous fury with their furious charge into the Chaos Terminators and Daemon Prince. The Prince went first thanks to his mark of Slaanesh managing two wounds on the Terminators. Both being given to the the ones equipped with the Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield combo, but one is slain. The 4 Lightning Claw Terminators then unleash fury on the Chaos Terminators destroying the units causing 12 wounds, none of which where saved! The remaining Thunder Hammer Terminator tried to finish off the Daemon Prince. Managing to cause two wounds, but the Chaos gods must have been smiling on the Prince as their powers prevented him from falling as he saved one with his 5+ invulnerable save leaving him with 1 wound.

The Crusaders charged the remaining Bezerkers and managed to annihilate all three thanks to preferred enemy that they get through the Emperors Champion.

(Writing the report I realised we forgot to make 4 fearless rolls for the Daemon Prince and so this may have completely changed the game).

Turn 3

Chaos

In the Chaos turn the Defiler relentlessly advances forward towards the regrouped Crusaders. Kharne and his Bezerkers disembark and their Rhino cruises around back towards the Defiler. The Plague marine Rhino moves forward 5 inches at combat speed past the combat.

In the shooting phase the Plague Marines shoot their Plasma guns out of the top hat at the Land Speeder that was a sitting duck after being stunned in the previous round easily destroying it. The Rhino then shot at the Crusaders missing the mark despite the Bolter being twin linked! The Defiler also shot at the Crusaders the huge Template scattering off the mark this time.

One pair of Obliterators despite hitting and easily penetrating the Land Speeder they only managed to immobilise and stun it. The other pair Shoot at the Templar's Rhino containing one of its Crusader squads and only managed to its Storm Bolter.

In the assault phase the Defiler Charged the Crusaders and went first as the Crusaders where only equipped with Frag grenades, which are not strong enough to penetrate the thick front armour. The Defiler hit three times from 5 attacks thanks to its extra close combat arm and managed to make all three count by killing 3 of the Crusaders. The Power fist champion did not manage to do anything to the defiler and O'Shashar failed his 3 fearless rolls as well!

Kharne and his Bezerkers charged the assault terminators to try and save the beloved Prince from being banished to the warp. Kharne and the Prince managed to slay 5 of the emperors finest, but this came at a cost of two of the bezerkers as Kharne in his blood lust slayed 2 of his own as well. This did not deter the others who leapt at the last remaining Terminator and cut him down.

Black Templars

In O'Shashar's movement phase he advances the Land Raider forward at combat speed. The Predators at the end of the board move out for a better view on the action hugging the table edge.

In the shooting phase the Crusaders in the Rhino near the Daemon Prince shoot a Meltagun, bolt pistol managing to finally bring down the daemonic menace. The Land Raider opened up on Kharne and his Bezerkers managing to kill them all except for Kharne himself. The predators shoot at the Plague Marine Rhino, managing to wreck it. The Emperors Champion's Rhino and the marines inside manage to kill one of the Plague Marines. The immobilised Rhino manages to repair itself.

In the assault phase the Defiler hits the Crusaders twice, but a I rolled a snakes eyes when needing only a 2+ to slay the Templars. The Power fist champion hit and penetrates, but the damage is not enough to slow down the Daemonic behemoth.

Turn 4

Chaos

Kharne after previously trying to consolidate into cover to try and avoid the awesome fire power of the Land Raider Crusader advances forward towards the mighty battle tank. The empty Rhino now returns and the Plague Marines move to embark onto it. The Rhino pops its smoke.

In the shooting phase one pair of Obliterators manage to destroy the twin rocket launcher on the immobilised Land Speeder, much to my despair as I desperately needed it dead for a kill point and to get shooting at other targets. The other pair shoot at the Rhino that killed the Daemon Prince and manage to wreck it.

With all the shooting done Kharne charges the Land Raider and fails to penetrate despite hitting 3 times and rolling 2D6 plus his strength of 6! The defiler kills another Crusader, the Power fist crusader in return doing nothing to rampaging machine. O'Shashar fails his fearless roll meaning the crusader is the only man left.

Black Templars

The Land Raider move back at combat speed again and the Crusaders then move over and embark inside. The repaired, empty Rhino then moves back at cruising speed and is now behind the Land Raider and wrecked Rhino as it tactically retreats to prevent me picking up an easy kill point. The Rhino containing the Emperors Champion moved back towards O'Shashar's corner stopping next to one of the walls.

In O'Shashar's shooting phase the predators open fire on the Rhino containing the Plague Marines, managing to penetrate its hull 3 times and causing a glancing hit. The smoke saved two of the penetrating hits. The resulting damage is that the crew was stunned and is also immobilised. The Land Raider shoots everything at Kharne resulting in him disappearing in a cloud of blood.

In the assault phase the Defiler finally manages to over come the last of the Crusader Squad and advances towards the Emperors Champion's Rhino.

Turn 5

Chaos

In my movement I had little to move. I advanced the Defiler toward the Emperors Champion's Rhino and moved the Obliterators slightly in my Basillica Administratum.

In the Shooting phase the Rhino fails to fix itself. The Plague marines within open fire with their Plasma guns at the retreating empty Rhino before it disappears, but only manage to stun it. One pair of Obliterators shoot Lascannons at the Land Raider and i managed to roll my second lot of snake eye to hit it! The other pair get better luck managing to immobilise the Emperors Champion's Rhino, not quite what I wanted, but it meant the Defiler would automatically hit in the coming assault phase.

The Defiler easily manages to penetrate the Rhino 5 times and causes it to explodes, but only 1 Neophyte dies in the explosion.

Black Templars

The Emperors Champion and his Crusader squad tactically retreats into O'Shashar's newly built Shrine of Aquila (see our previous article) in his movement phase. They are able to do this as the predators give covering fire finally managing to wreck the rampaging Defiler as it chases the Templar. The Land Raider opens fire on the immobilised Plague Marine Rhino wrecking it and causing the Plague Marines to disembark again. The Land Speeder with only its Heaver Bolter left had could not see anything to shoot at!

I rolled the dice and got a 6 meaning the game would go on.

Turn 6

Chaos

Being about 4 kill points behind and with nothing much left other then 4 Obliterators and 6 Plague Marines I humbly know victory is from my grasp. I moved my Plague Marines into cover as their Plasma guns would have done nothing to the Land Raider and it was too far away to charge it with my Power Fist Champion. Once done I went straight to shooting running the plague marines into a better position.

One pair of my Obliterators finally manage to finish of the Land Speeder and the other pair manage a glancing hit on the Land Raider, but this only resulted in a stun which thanks to the extra armour means it had little effect as it was reduced to shaken and because of the machine spirit it could still shoot one of its guns if it needed to. This seemed to be the general theme of the game the extra armour on all O'Shashar's vehicles really making up for their points cost as I failed to roll high enough to do anything other then stun.

Black Templars

O'Shashar now 3 kill points in the lead decided to go down the safe route and did a tactical retreat to his corner of the table. The Emperors Champion squad embarks on the Rhino that fixed itself earlier in the game. The Landraider popped its smoke. He then rolled to see if the game would continue and it did go on for one final turn.

Turn 7

Chaos

With O'Shashar tactically retreating, I decided to follow suit with my Plague marines in an orderly 2 by 3 formation headed back to my corner. In the shooting phase they marched further to my corner. All four of my Obliterators shot Lascannons at the Land Raider scoring two hits and guess what...another roll of snake eyes from me means it didn't even need its smoke!

Black Templars

O'Shashar manages to move all his tanks in a nice block formation hugging his corner of the board. He had nothing to shoot at so that ended the game.

Victory goes to Black Templars 9 kill points to 6

"No pity! No Remorse! No fear!"

Conclusion

I was pleased I didn't get annihilated as the last game I had. Admittedly I should have made changes to my list, but I never got round to it. I still need to sort out my tactics during the game as I am still making a couple of mistakes costing me dearly and my dice rolling certainly did not help! Good battle overall, took a while to type this up, but I think our future battle reports will have some nice shiny pictures and diagrams.

If you have made it this far then you have my greatest thanks. Until next time folks where I will kick start our terrain series.

Mixing the Shrine of the Aquila and Sanctum Imperialis terrain kits

A nicely laid out board courtesy of Games Workshop

Good afternoon minions of the Plague Father and welcome to another Sunday afternoon. This week I had been planing to continue my rhino ( currently sat on my painting table after being under coated ) however following on from my big sort out last week I decided to assemble a new piece of terrain for my board.

Originally I was going to build the Shrine of the Aquila as I had an unopened one just wasting away in the corner begging to be built (even more than the Imperial Sector ).

However after a dry fitting I decided it could be slightly larger to balance off with the 4 floor building I already have. After looking around the internet I saw a very nice looking model on the Games Workshop site.

An impressive building I may still build at some point.

Unfortunately while I had all the spare parts to make this impressive model it came in at over two foot long, a foot wide and over a foot high in places which seemed too big and was scrapped.

So instead I decided to try my hand at mixing a few of the Games Workshop kits to see what I could make. Drawing inspiration from the original conversion I saw on DakkaDakka which made me buy the Aquila last year, I mixed it with the Sanctum Imperialis from my Imperial Sector.

A view of the front ...

The model went together better than I expected, with the shrine having very few pieces only a little filing and cutting were needed to join it with the Sanctum. The joins did have a few issues as the large pieces of the Aquila seemed to be just a little bent which I hadn't noticed before so a dash of green stuff to fill a few holes and sections between floors and I'm happy. The size and LOS blocking it provides is more in the area I was after though the Aquila itself is by no means a slouch.

and rear with a little of the green stuff showing.

All being well I'll get this painted up without too much grief and try it our in game some time soon to see if it fits in and worth the delay in my painting.

Until next time I hope you have enjoyed my humble offering to the Plague Father.

Dark Angels Army Project

Greetings all! Well I thought it was about time I make myself known and add a post to the fine work already done by my comrades here at the Cupboard.

So thoughts went immediately to what should my first post be about? I play with three main armies, and first started playing 40k over 20 years ago so there were a whole host of things I could post. Then it hit me.

This post is dedicated to all those out there, like me, who love the game, love the story and myth behind all the races, love building a good army even when you end up getting annihilated, BUT when it comes to modelling and painting you're not right good...

That's me. When it comes to painting I'm absolutely useless. I always have a picture in my head of how amazingly well painted each miniature is going to come out, but somewhere along the way it all goes pear shaped. Ah well, ones for the one god and all that.

So what's this post all about? Well whenever I have idea's for modding or painting, I'll go have a look all over t'intarweb for guides and you see all these guides where someone takes a coat hanger and stick and builds the emperor's Gothic palace in fine detail all in 3 steps. I just end up with a coat hanger that's got a stick sello taped to it. So this post, will be one for those of us who aren't so good at painting or modding but make up for it with enthusiasm and love of the game itself.

As I say I started playing the game many years ago, and had quite a long break off and have recently been pulled back in by O'Shashar. Now I've always wanted a Dark Angel army list and had a few marines back from when I started to play so have decided on a 1750 point list of DA and I'm now building this up using the bits I have, as well as adding newer pieces and painting them up.

So first of all, what's the list?

HQ 1
Sammael
Ravenwing master on Jetbike

Troop
Ravenwing Squadron
6 Marine Bikers + 1 Attack Bike
Included in here are 1 Sergeant with Power Weapon, 1 Apothecary, 1 Plasma Gun, 1 Melta Gun and a Multi-Melta on the Attack Bike

Troop
Marine Tactical Squad in a Razorback
4 Marines & 1 Sergeant
1 Plasma Gun & Melta bombs
Razorback has Twin Linked Lascannon

HQ 2
Belial
Deathwing master with Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield

Troop
Deathwing Terminators
4 Terminators & 1 Sergeant
1 Cyclone Missile Launcher, 2 with Lightning Claws and 3 with Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield

Troop
Deathwing Terminators
3 Terminators, 1 Sergeant & 1 Apothecary
1 Cyclone Missile Launcher, 2 with Lightning Claws and 3 with Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield

Elite
Dreadnought
Twin-linked Autocannon & Missile Launcher

Elite
Dreadnought
Twin-linked Autocannon & Missile Launcher

Heavy
Predator
Autocannon & Lascannons on side sponsons

So thats my list where I want to end up. So what's my starting material?

Marine Cleric on Jetbike
This is quite an old miniature that you can no longer buy. Also, as the only marine who still rides a jetbike is Sammael I thought this would be ideal.

5 Terminators
Bought around the time of the original Space Hulk game, 2 with LC and 2 with TH/SS.

5 Space Marines

1 Rhino
This is being converted using a Lascannon turret from the Space Crusade game to turn it into a Razorback.

1 Terminator Librarian
From the Space Hulk Deathwing addon, this is being converted into Belial.

1 Dreadnought
From the Assault on Blackreach pack.

6 Marine Bikers in various states of repair.

To add to the above I will then just need 1 more pack of Terminators, a Predator and a Dreadnought. Then look to get the Ravenwing attachments sprue to customise the marine bikes.

So for my first post I'm starting with the easiest bit of modding and painting. The Razorback.

First of all we take 1 Rhino. This Rhino is one I procured from O'Shashar and was painted plain black for his Templars army. I've added a little detail on to the exhaust pipes and side panels, not a lot, but it helps to break up the plain black. All that was used was some Boltgun Metal paint.

Next we take the lascannon turret from the old Space Crusade game. Here modelled in a lovely shade of yellow.

Next Stage is to separate the cannon from the base and paint it up so it matches the rest of the Rhino, as I'm not sure the yellow would really go. Again looking at Chaos Black with some of the pipes in Boltgun Metal, then dry brushed with Boltgun metal to give it a kind of metallic look.

Finally we then magnetise the turret and attach. This can then be removed should I just need a plain old Rhino any time.

And there we have it. It's not amazing, it's not going to win any Golden Demon awards, but on the board I have to say it looks pretty damn good and I like it.

Next post will look at the Terminators I have and converting them to my first Deathwing Squad.

Black Templar or Tomb Kings

Good afternoon children of the Plague Father thank you for joining me again in our humble part of his garden. This week has been a little hectic with me getting 16 skeletal archers built up to go with my Liche priest and following that up by treating them all to a base coat.

This had me thinking I was on track with Tomb Kings and I would start painting them up allowing me to finally stick to my plans of 1 unit finished before I buy another..

However after a 2v2 game with Mighty Simo and his friend Liam ( which saw me rolling out my Templar to back up my T'au Cadre as our usual forth wasn't free ). I was quite happy with how they played out, despite not using them for over a year and me not really knowing what was the best way to use them since the FAQ. This reminded me that I had a few unopened boxes waiting to be built up in my 40k corner ( and gave me an excuse to open every box to see what treasure was hiding in plain sight )

Nearly £100 worth of marines ignored on a shelf and my wife still lets me live is a miracle
With my passion for the Crusaders reignited I took a willing volunteer to the painting table to see if I could do a better job with then than my last attempt with them nearly two years ago ( the sneaky T'au stole their place as my main army and are still holding that title firmly ).  So to strike while the iron was hot I part assembled the Razorback as a Rhino with the Forgeworld Rhino front & doors kit ( Not sure when they managed to get in my bits box but I have 2 sets of them along with 10 Forgeworld Templar Shields & Shoulder pads )

Dry fitted together nicely except the doors which needed some hot water treatment

I have left the top off to try and encourage myself to paint the inside as I know I won't do it if I make it too fiddly but I do want to improve my modelling and painting so needs must. I looked at using the Forgeworld rear hatch but think it maybe too much to have it on all four sides so instead a small symbol from the chapter upgrade pack was stuck on instead which is a little more subtle and I like the out come so here's hope others do too.

Realistically I know I'm not the quickest modeller or painter and I should pick just one but my Black Templars need love and the Tomb Kings are an army I have wanted since I was little ( not that I have ever actually played fantasy ) so both are going to be stealing what little free time I have. On the upside they are very different models so should let me practice different techniques and help me improve ( not to mention plenty of fodder to post on here to keep me from losing favour with the Plague father ).

Until next time children.

A Further venture into Citadel Finecast

Good afternoon, daemonic spawn of the great unclean one. I have been very busy of late and have got one or two terrain tutorials lined up for you next week. I was going to post a battle report from a game we had on Tuesday, but after about turn 3 the content severely dropped, so we are still working the bugs out of that, the pictures where not great either. Needless to say O'Shashar gave me and my friend Liam a butt whooping. Anyway onto my post on Citadel Finecast.

As you can see above is a box of new Citadel Finecast Eldar Rangers. They look pretty good, although they are not mine :( They are for a friend of mine, who unfortunately is a bit slack when it comes to modelling. At first glance they look really good and I thought I would continue where O'Shashar left off, you will understand why later on.
Now as you can see this model had a slightly bent gun, now with a metal model you could have bent this back into shapes. Wit h the resin if you not already aware is to pop the part you want to fix in hot water for about 10-20 seconds and then bend back into shape. Then plunge it into cold water to set the resin and there you go, fixed!

Now, hopefully you can see the contrast in quality on the two models above. The one at the left is a perfect cast, with little cleaning up needed. However the right model looks a little 'rough' and not as crisp.
Again a close up of one of the models, as you can see I have circled a huge bubble almost the size of the foot. In the most recent White Dwarf it says there may be a few small bubbles that can be fixed with glue, I don't want to sound funny, but I doubt this would work here and green stuff is the only option.
In summary, I really really want to like the Citadel Finecast range, I really do, but the consistent quality unfortunately lets the product down. Now I have handled 11 Finecast miniatures and there is a clear inconsistency. The Chaplain I won on the Blog Wars raffle is of outstanding casting quality, but as you can see above I found casting quality and bubbles on nearly half of the miniatures and to me if this is going to be the case it does not justify the price increase, so GW if you see this please increase your Quality Control to avoid disappointed customers!

I will admit though that Finecast is alot easy and quicker then metal, but due to the quality problems I have outlined you can end up doing more work then needed, especially for the price hike! I would suggest to anyone out there that if you are buying finecast, try and do it in a shop so you cna look at the miniatures before you buy them to avoid dissappointment.

First Venture in to Finecast

The official promo picture of the new finecast Liche Priest

Following on from finishing my T'au to the table top level for Blogwars I have decided to have a little break from them as I feel a little burnt out. We have recently been talking about trying WFB and the first army in the range that caught my eye when I was young was the Tomb Kings but never went any further than just liking the look of them.

Now they have been re-released with a shiny new army book to go with 8th I have decided to try my hand at collecting a small force ( no doubt it will quickly get out of control ) so I can try a game as I have never played a fantasy properly so could end up being a painting exercise but who doesn't love skeleton minions.

Now if you are still with me following my ramblings I applaud you, now as the title and the picture suggest my first model I have picked up is a finecast Liche Priest and a box of basic Skeletons I plan to build as archers but today is about the priest. I bought it in store as had heard all sorts of rumours about the models and returns being refused for all but the most destroyed of models so needed to eye one up myself.

As luck had it two were in store but both had slight issues, the first had a bent staff and the second had some bubbling on the face so needless to say the crooked staff came home with me.

Cleaner out of the box than I was expecting

Once I got it out of the box it was looking cleaner than I expected with only a little bit of flash mainly focused around the cloth and the blade of his staff which came away with little effort though the blade had two large rods of resin stuck to it but nothing else. The first thing I noticed was that it is very flexible ( no models were hurt during test only the sprue getting abused ) and soft so found clippers were no good for the job and had to use my knife instead.

Free from the tyrannical grip of the sprue

At this point I did notice that the underside of the arm holding the staff had bubbled on the bone and pretty much destroyed it as the bone is very thin though is out of site and a small amount of green stuff should fix this I hope.

Over all I'm happy with the model and the new finecast was easy enough to work with though I would have much preferred to just go to plastic rather than resin. However I think I will be avoiding any models I can't see through the packaging as would hate to get home only to find its a miscast and then grief in store trying to return it. Though as I have only heard rumoured stories of refusals you would hope it won't be an issue as long as where you buy don't become unreasonable.

Dry fitted and the withered arm doesn't look as bad as I expected
